27 ib74-05ib74-05 ca 1889-1909 BOSTON; MASSACHUSETTS; UNITED STATES BOSTON - MASSACHUSETTS - UNITED STATES - Manufacturer NOTES: United States Public Health Service uniform button. The design features the core USPHS device: a caduceus (the winged staff of Hermes entwined with two serpents) superimposed on a fouled anchor. This specific combination is symbolic of the service's origins; the anchor represents its roots in maritime medicine (the 1798 Marine Hospital Service), and the caduceus represents its broader health mission and non-combatant status. A very similar design was used on WWII Cadet Nurse Corps uniforms. NOTES: History of company from the Smithsonian American History Museum: Oak Hall Clothing Company was a well-known men’s clothing retailer in Boston started by George W. Simmons. The name derives from the new woodwork in the store following an 1842 renovation (the Boston Evening Transcript of February 6, 1909 states the store opened in 1835, although C. B. Simmons, one of the founders had opened a clothing store on Ann Street in 1814)—a look that became synonymous with high-end men’s clothing stores. Thanks to Simmons's aggressive marketing campaigns, the store was familiar to most residents of New England in the mid-19th century. It is mentioned in works by Nathaniel Hawthorne (“Main Street”) and derisively by Henry David Thoreau (“Ktaadn”), as well as in correspondence by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who was incensed at the store’s use of advertising poems (written by “Professor Goodfellow”), and patterned on Longfellow's style. Source: “Oak Hall in American Literature” by Steven Allaback, in American Literature Vol. 46 No.4 Jan. 1975, p. 545-549. In May 1843 to the business was located at 32 & 34 Ann Street, Boston. By 1850 the location was 32, 34, 36 and 38 Ann Street. In October 1853 the address is 32 & 34 North Street (name changed from Ann), Boston. In 1914 the company was at 95-105 Washington Street, Adams Square. The company had been purchased by former Boston mayor John F. Fitzgerald earlier that year (June). 1939.0064.000005
